Greenville County, South Carolina, is known for its varying elevation and terrain. The mountainous part of the county boasts a maximum elevation of 3,707 feet and the southern tip’s elevation of the county, checks in at 440 ft.

Downtown Greenville is home to Reedy Falls and the iconic Liberty Bridge. One of the features separating this region from others is the trails and greenways. Trails connect us to natural space and our heritage by preserving historic places.

The Swamp Rabbit Trail is a 28-mile multi-use greenway along the Reedy River. The trail follows the former Greenville railroad corridor of the Northern Railway.

In case you are wondering where the name “swamp rabbit” came from, I can assure you that it wasn’t just some cute name made up before the ribbon cutting in 2009.

The legend of the name came from the former railroad passengers, who noted how the train hopped on the tracks like the native swamp rabbit. This nickname carried over to the present-day name, the Swamp Rabbit Trail.

The trail starts hopping in the northern part of the county in the charming town of Travelers Rest, passing through Falls Park, and moving through Downtown Greenville into the southern part of the county. Travelers are treated to a beautiful view along every step of the trail, showcasing the connection to Greenville’s past and leading into the future.

No matter what the weather throws at you, the Upstate of South Carolina remains hot with attractions, beautiful lakes, great eateries, and adventures for the entire family.
